The Granites Gold Mine, located in the Tanami Desert 540 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, will be expanded. Newmont Mining will spend up to $120 million constructing a new decline and upgrading processing facilities, this is with finality the upgrade would increase production and extend the mine’s life by three years, to 2027. «Tanami will increase our production on an annual basis by 80,000 ounces and will reduce operating cost by about 5 per cent.»

The mine, increased production of significantly in recent years, expecting to produce  400,000 ounces this year, compared to just 183,000 ounces in 2012. In addition to the 750 people already working on site the expansion should see the creation of about 60 new jobs during the expansion and 20 new positions longer term. The revised expansion will enable Newmont Mining to access a new ore body discovered in 2012, while mining the current ore body more efficiently.
