Welcome to The Kalgoorlie mine, Operation Australia

As the largest open-pit gold mine,  commonly called the Super Pit, cuts an oblong shape out of Western Australia 3.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 320 meters deep. The Super Pit produces around 850,000 ounces of gold each year. The Kalgoorlie mine (KCGM), commonly referred to as “the Super Pit,” is Australia’s biggest goldmine. With gold prices hitting record modern-day highs, its plan to make the Super Pit even bigger, unlocking billions of dollars’ worth of extra gold and extending the mine’s life through to 2017. The expansion would make the mine 4 km long, 1.6km wide and 600m deep, enough to fit two Eiffel Towers on top of each other. KCGM spent $268 million with local businesses last year and is the city’s biggest employer. The Super Pit is located off the Goldfields Highway on the south-east edge of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The pit is oblong in shape and is approximately 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and 570 metres deep. At these dimensions, it is large enough to be seen from space. Kalgoorlie is a city in the Goldfields-Esperance region of WA founded in 1893 during the gold rush and is located 600 kms East-Northeast of Perth.

The Super Pit gold mine was given an eight-year extension  delaying its closure until 2029 and allaying concerns weakening bullion prices would lead to an early shutdown. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), which operates the Super Pit for 50-50 partners Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining.
